Various forms of digital fraud have continued to be an issue for businesses and individuals worldwide. For instance, The FBI released a report on 10 September 2019 stating that worldwide losses to Business Email Compromise (“BEC”) scams have reached $26 billion over the last three years, between June 2016 and July 2019.
In Nigeria, the situation is similar, as a 2018 Cybersecurity report by Deloitte states that social engineering attacks conducted via emails, SMS, and telephone calls, is still the number one cyber threat being faced in Nigeria. Although Nigerians continue to fall prey, not much has been consistently done to protect consumers from the greedy talons of fraudsters.
As cybercriminals continue to find new ways to commit old crimes, it has become pertinent for well-meaning individuals, businesses, and organizations to unite in the fight against cybercrime. A key weapon required to deliver big wins in this battle is education, mobilization, and sensitization of the populace. A gap the #NoGoFallMaga (NGFM) campaign is eager to fill.
NoGoFallMaga is a national movement of young people, working to combat preventable digital fraud with consumer-centered sensitization and education. Digital fraud in this context includes email deception, phone-based scams, online fraud – particularly where cybercriminals impersonate trusted organizations. We will leverage fun experiences and content, to catalyze the decline of cyber-related fraud, one trickle of knowledge and advice at a time.
We believe that until fraud becomes unprofitable, it will continue to run as an undesirable parallel economy and hence remain attractive to youths. The #Nogofallmaga campaign is dedicated to raising awareness on digital fraud issues by equipping the populace with knowledge for better decision making and fraud mitigation.
