Fake employment vacancies in the name of the United Nations have become a staple of internet fraudsters. Recently, our intelligence team came across one of such scams. It was a PDF document being shared on social messaging applications. The document was advertising several vacancies into a non-existent agency of the United Nations called “The United Nations Commission for Industrial and Economic Development (UNCIED)”
Below is a screenshot of the beginning of the document.
The document is 37 pages long with 16 different vacancies and is very detailed with proper formating and good diction. Suffice to say at a first glance it can fool anyone. But upon further scrutiny, it is not too difficult to establish that this is a scam.
First, a good rule of thumb is to always use a search engine to find out more information. Using google reveals no institution of the United Nations has such a name. Instead, what we find is a website that posted the exact same list of vacancies sometime in January this year.
This is a huge clue. Why would an organization post the exact same number of vacancies barely four months after? Of course, an explanation could be made for this but it remains a red flag.
The next pointer that this is a scam is the email address.
Visiting the domain of the email address, we see that it was recently registered on namecheap and a WHOIS search confirms this; the domain was registered on the 16th of December 2019. This fact is another red flag as it is a common practice for scammers to register new domains when undertaking a new scheme. Also, the fact that the domain has nothing on it should raise eyebrows as it is incredulous to believe that a commission of the United Nations cannot afford web development services.
Digging further into the domain, we find that its mail server is active and is being hosted on the namecheap platform.
From the foregoing, we can see this is an elaborate ruse to hoodwink unsuspecting job applicants. The play here is that after an application has been sent in, the scammers will request payment of fees at one or more stages of the recruitment process. Also, Identity Theft could occur due to personal information obtained during the sham recruitment process.
Finally, for the would-be Job applicant, eternal vigilance and due diligence are indispensable.

Below is a recent email received by a job applicant after responding to their vacancy.
Your application for a position at CIED has been considered. Please open the attached files for details.
As you will see in your employment letter, a mandatory one month CIED Orientation and training is scheduled to hold in New York, USA and Employees are expected to attend. Therefore you are advised to contact info@uncied.org immediately on information/details regarding travel and preparation arrangements.
We recommend that travel arrangements and plans for this training exercise be made ONLY by CIED Agents. The original copy of your employment letter will be sent to you via courier alongside your travel documents ONLY AFTER all necessary obligations and requirements have been met by you and your travel itinerary put in place by our Agent.
Stated below are the specified dates for the up-coming training exercise in each respective months. Employees are expected to make their choice of the training batch most convenient for them to attend.
The training dates for August batch are as follows;
7th August 2021: Arrival date in New York, USA and hotel check-in
9th August 2021: Training commences in New York, USA.
27th August 2021: Training Ends.
The training dates for September batch are as follows;
4th September 2021: Arrival date in New York, USA and hotel check-in
6th September 2021: Training commences in New York, USA.
24th September 2021: Training Ends.

22nd October 2021: Training Ends.

I received an email saying I am being considered for the position I applied for under UNCIED and that I need to submit my documents before the 15th of September 2020 I was going to submit but something in me said I first google the organization and thankfully I have found this link saying UN does not have such a department.

Interestingly, I was busily filling this same interview form I received in my mail about a week ago. Actually i filled in the Form and we are at the stage of doing medicals. But since I have learnt that some fake people recruit so that they make pipo became sex workers and drug dealers I had to do some digging just to find this. The even invited us to attend the training for a month.

I had filled in the forms and was at the stage where i had to procure an H-3 Visa. They then sent a message that i should pay for application for Visa and they included the reimbursement form. I asked for banking details….and lo and behold, its a personal account. Obviously red flags went up and googled the names of the people who have been signing off emails, and it got scary. Then found your post on the scam!! thanx a lot!! very elaborate scam!!

Today morning i received an email of Employment Offer for Human Resource Officer. with four attachment on Declaration, Terms and Condition of employment, detail salary breakdown slip and UN salary, allowance and Benefits document and they have refereed me to an email of their agent to prepare my travel documents and other details.
I received the same and i sent them all they required. I was expecting competency interview, only to be given an offer of employment. Sham!!!!!

I almost sold all my household properties knowing that I would be relocating for a longer period. Thank God I did some digging up and came across this vital information. These guys could have left me a pauper. I also fell into this scam, replied to a job advert,got a reply to the effect that my application had been considered, filled in the v-11 forms and submitted,did everything they requested including medical examinations. I was also promised to go to New York for the orientation training in Feb next year. I only got suspicious after being asked to pay sums of money within a week for accommodation and h-3 visa application. This was regardless of what they had earlier stated that I was not going to pay anything along the recruitment process. I didn’t pay anything,but I’m just worried about the personal information I gave them.
You have to be on the lookout, as your personal information could be sold to others who might use it for nefarious activities. We suggest you change the password of the email address used in the communication and set up two-factor authentication. Also, if you gave out financial details such as bank accounts, you should monitor those accounts closely and set up restrictions on how money can be moved in and out of such accounts. As for your personal information, you should use search engines and put the details in inverted commas to see if they turn up on any websites on the internet. In the event it does, you should write to such websites to have the information removed.
So this is really a scam? Wow! I applied in may 2020, they then responded in August with P11, personal history and interview forms which I filled with sleepless nights and submitted. This 15 Dec., 2020 they are offering me a job in New York, USA as an environmental affairs officer. my God with huge salary I couldn’t believe US $ 8, 800+ per month with other benefits. I nearly filled the declaration, employment agreement forms etc. They sent again for submmition.
I’ve sent an email to the said agent and I’m patiently waiting for his next crook move.

I, together with a workmate, also felt for this scam. We completed all their requirements until they requested an H-3 visa application stuff for which we were to remit to them some amount of money. Since the UN does not usually ask for money, we became suspicious and my workmate enquired for further information from a friend working at the UN. My friend had even taken passports for all his dependant children. Then, the scam was revealed. Thank God we didn’t resign from our current jobs.

Thank God I googled the agency after my brother shared the fake offer of employment with me. Being an HR professional working with international organizations, the letter was too substandard to be coming from UN, I never heard of UNCIED before. This site has saved my brother from unnecessary stress of filling out a form or wasting money. These guys are preying on the vulnerability of people and I pray people don’t get scammed. A cursory look at the name UNCIED reveals no authentic details pertaining to a UN agency. They have a well planned seem to be genuine process but don’t be fooled.
This your information is helpful. When I received the latest update appointment letter, I went straight to UN Agencies and UN Commissions on UN website but could not find the Fraudster’s organization name listed. I decided to type their name in the browser to learn about them from what people say about them, then I found your site.

These guys are total idiots and crooks.
See here how far i had reached with them. Demanding payment / procurement of H-3 Visa. before that, they sent me Entry Medical form,Application for UN Passport/ lasser passer. They made me do complex medical checkups (X-ray, electrocardiogram for heart, blood, stool, eye, etc,,,I mean real never seen before general medical checkup for employment entry all at my expense. All these followed after offer of employment letter.
I thank God. I serve a living GOD. I had not resigned from my current Job and secondly had not sent them the money yet. Thanks for the people managing this website. may God bless you. My Internet research returned this web page. Thank God for opening my eyes to analyze things out..

I suffered the same. From application through, interviews, appointment, preparing my passports, medical form, lessez passer application, form 1-129,.
I submitted everything.
They sent me an invoice to wire the money, that after that they could process my H3 visa for the September batch to New York for orientation & training.
When they asked this much money to an alien account, restricting matters with their agent & not visiting the American embassy, I became suspecious of them & landed on this page.
OMG! I was actually filling my form and out of curiosity, and wanted to learn more about the organization in question…. here I am totally baffled at all this I am seeing here. Thank God I search about the org before applying.

They are asking for passport data and an application for a visa to Hong Kong to be filled….Wow, to what extent do these people go to get your information….

Same happened to me, i was suspicious from the beginning cos i knew UN uses Inspira, but the agencies sometimes through roaster may email you. I was a bit skeptical cos i actually applied for the same position, so i knew no matter what an issue of payment will come up if its a scam. Well I must say these scammers are getting better and better by day.
